The Interactive Metronome™ (IM)
Practitioners in the
field of speech-language pathology recognize the
role of motor planning and sequencing
in the acquisition of speech, language, communication skills, and
cognition.
IM is a unique
application of technology that can improve those
underlying capacities, which are essential to
patients’ development of speech-language and
cognitive skills. Through neuroplasticity, the
cognitive-motor
exercises that make up IM tasks stimulate the
brain to adapt or create new neural pathways
that compensate
for injury or developmental delay, which results
in functional outcomes.
IM can result in
or contribute to improvements in:
-
Language
processing
-
Social
communication
-
Planning and
sequencing
-
Attention,
concentration and response time
-
Control of
impulsivity and aggression
-
Academic
Performance (Increased cognitive
processing performances in mathematics,
reading, and language skills)
-
Focus and
Attention
The Interactive
Metronome™ is a 15-session program performed in
the clinic. Depending on the pre-test scores,
children may be
required to complete pre-synchronization
sessions prior to starting the program. At least
three sessions a week for 5 weeks are
recommended and each session is approximately one hour long.
Case Studies indicate that IM has
improved the lives of individuals with Autism,
Asperger Syndrome, ADHD, Learning Disabilities,
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Cerebral
Vascular Accident (CVA) or Stroke, Sensory
Integration Disorder, etc.

Fast
ForWord™
Fast ForWord™
is an interactive language-training program from
Scientific Learning Corporation. They are
training programs in the form of interactive,
computer-based training programs for the
language-learning impaired
and are the culmination of 20 years of research
surrounding brain plasticity (the scientific
principle that the brain
never ceases to learn). These programs are a
revolutionary proven approach to rapidly
building the skills
necessary for language competence.
The series includes:
Fast ForWord Language™
(focuses on children ages 5-12).
Children, within the
Fast ForWord Language™ program, have shown
improvement in auditory
processing speed, working memory, serial order
processing, phonological awareness,
listening comprehension, syntax, and morphology.
Children who have completed this program are
better able to interact with parents, teachers,
and peers. On average students make 1 to 2
years
of language gains after completion of the 4 - 8
week program. These new language skills
empower children to participate in the world in
ways that were not possible before Fast ForWord
Language™ training.
Fast ForWord Language to Reading™ (is a
subsequent program used after
mastering Fast ForWord Language™ and is
available for those up to age 16).
Fast ForWord
Language to Reading focuses on the critical
elements of language and reading,
which in turn increases the individual's
awareness of grammar and syntax. The program
builds
upon and refines the skills learned in Fast
ForWord Language™, targets skills required for
reading,
and improves phonological awareness, sound
letter correspondence, word recognition,
listening
comprehension, verbal fluency, and reading
fluency. Additionally, the program is used for
the
enhancement of spelling, reading, and
comprehension. Fast ForWord Language to Reading™
not only expands the language and cognitive
skills, but also introduces new skills, by
building on
the acquired processed speech skills.
Fast ForWord Middle & High
School™ (geared
toward adolescents and adults).
The Fast ForWord
Middle & High School™ program helps adolescents
and adults improve overall
communication skills, as well as listening, thinking, and reading skills,
and may foster participation
in group or class discussions.
The Fast ForWord™
training program is only available through
qualified professionals who have completed a
Scientific Learning Corporation Certification
When we provide
Fast ForWord at our clinic, we make efforts to
be flexible so that the time is convenient to
the
family or the individual. Typically, for a
school-aged student during the school year, this
means after school.
